Satin pajamas are low maintenance. They don’t need dry cleaning or hand washing. But a few small habits make a big difference in how glossy and smooth they stay after months of wear.
Here’s the routine we recommend for polyester satin like ours (95% polyester, 5% spandex). Always check the care label on any garment first.
Before you wash
- Button up the top. Fastened buttons keep the shape and stop buttons from snagging other things in the load.
- Turn it inside out. This protects the shiny face of the satin and the print.
- Use a mesh laundry bag if you have one. It keeps zippers, hooks and Velcro from catching the fabric.
- Wash with similar colors. Bright prints look best washed with like colors.
Washing
- Choose a gentle or delicate cycle.
- Use cold water. Heat is the main enemy of satin’s smooth finish and stretch.
- Use a mild liquid detergent. Skip bleach.
- Go easy on fabric softener. It can leave a film that dulls the shine.
Drying
This is the step that matters most. Hang to dry on a padded hanger or lay flat. Tumble drying on high heat can cause shrinkage, a dull look and wear on the spandex that gives the fabric its stretch. Satin dries quickly, so it’s usually ready in a few hours.
Wrinkles and ironing
Polyester satin resists wrinkles fairly well, and hanging it straight from the washer helps most creases fall out. If you need to press it:
- Use the lowest heat setting (often labeled “synthetic” or “silk”).
- Iron inside out, or put a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.
- A handheld steamer works well too. Keep it moving and don’t press it directly onto the fabric.
Spot cleaning
Spilled tea in bed? Blot (don’t rub) with cold water and a drop of mild detergent, then rinse and let it air dry. Rubbing can roughen the satin surface.
Storing your sets
Fold them loosely or hang them. Keep them out of direct sunlight for long periods, which can fade bright prints over time.
Quick cheat sheet
| Do | Cold water · gentle cycle · inside out · hang dry · low heat iron |
| Don’t | Bleach · high-heat dryer · hot iron on the shiny side · lots of fabric softener |
